# How to Be a Firework During Your Next Networking Event

Hot dogs, fireworks, family, and friends. What’s not to love about the 4th of July weekend?
While most of us will be out grilling and enjoying the warm weather, it’ll be tempting to put our careers on hold for the weekend.
Although this is a long overdue vacation for most of us, 4th of July weekend presents a great networking opportunity for [job seekers](https://careershift.com/blog/2014/04/3-ways-to-be-a-more-efficient-job-seeker/). Whether you’re unemployed or looking for a new job, it’s important not forgo your job search altogether while you’re celebrating with friends and family.
To help you take your job search to the next level over the holiday weekend, here are five unlikely networking opportunities to take advantage of this 4th of July:
**1. Family barbecues**
Grilling outside with family and friends is one of the best times to catch up with everyone you haven’t seen in a while.
While you’re hanging out friends and family, update them on your job search. The people who are closest to you want to help you succeed, so you shouldn’t be embarrassed or ashamed to tell them about your unemployment situation. Chances are, someone at your family cookout will have a connection to a job opportunity.
**2. The beach**
There’s no rule saying you can’t sunbathe or wear your swimsuit while networking. Believe it or not, awesome opportunities can come your way when you’re not in a traditional networking setting.
When you’re at the beach, you never know who you can run into. Don’t be hesitate to meet new people or keep your eyes peeled for old acquaintances. You could very well end up with a [job interview](https://careershift.com/blog/2014/05/how-to-be-your-best-self-during-a-job-interview/) at the end of your vacation.
**3. At the fireworks show**
Again, this is another great place where to meet new people and run into old colleagues. Almost everyone watches the fireworks, therefore this is another fun way to network and expose yourself to new connections.
**4. During happy hour**
Head out to a happy hour at a local bar. Even though this is a relaxed setting, it’s a great way to get people together over the holiday weekend.
Invite 10 to 15 of your friends and tell them to bring a guest. Not only does this give you the chance to catch up with everyone, but you will also meet new faces.
**5. At the campground**
While you’re becoming one with nature, take advantage of your campsite to further your career.
At most campgrounds, you’re surrounded by all types of friendly people for a few days. Take some time to walk around and get to know your neighbors. If you’re able to spark some connections, these could turn into valuable contacts for your job search.
During the 4th of July weekend, be sure to wear your networking hat wherever you go.
